Displace is a saxophone-driven funk fusion ensemble based in Tampa, Florida known for their energetic performances, improvisational prowess, and wildly diverse sonic palette. The Floridian four-piece effectively utilizes their extensive training in a variety of musical backgrounds to produce a truly eclectic blend of infectious pop melodies, complex jazz progressions, and danceable funk grooves.
The band originally formed in 2012 as a strictly experimental improvisation act. Compositions organically formed and evolved through the spontaneity of live performance, and made their way onto Displace’s 2015 debut album, Eureka!. This was the first of a series that will ultimately complete a concept discography with recurring thematic elements spanning multiple albums, expansive and immersive tonal colors, and an odyssey of genres that reflects the band’s collective evolution in musical exploration. The sequel album Undertow fades in on the reversed reverb tails of the previous album, quite literally picking up where the first left off. It continues the musical story in a more polished and produced format, with heavy use of overdubs creating a fully realized woodwind section and rich layers of keyboard, background vocal and percussion parts.
Displace has been included on the lineup of several prominent music festivals throughout the southeast U.S. including Suwannee Hulaween, Gasparilla Music Festival, Blackwater Music Festival, Aura Music Festival, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Soulshine Farm Fest, Fractal Beach Music Festival, and The Great Outdoors Jam. They have shared bills with the likes of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Roosevelt Collier, The Heavy Pets, Marco Benevento, TAUK, Dumpstaphunk, The Fritz, Ike Stubblefield, and more.
With the addition of new guitarist George Pennington III, the band is currently writing and recording material for their third studio album. Their performance schedule actively circles the southeast while expanding to the northeast, west to Colorado, and everywhere in between. Riding on the momentum of an explosive start to 2018, Displace shows no signs of slowing down.
